Traditional hemp cultivation is regaining some dynamism
In Marseille, hemp—cannabis in Latin—was cultivated to make ropes for the navy. This is where the name "canebière" comes from, but canebières were found everywhere in Provence, and it is this tradition that today's hemp growers want to see revived.
Indeed, Marseille was one of the largest hemp trading posts in the world for the manufacture and trade of slings and ropes. La Canebière (formerly "la Cannebis") comes from the Provençal canebe, which itself comes from the Latin cannabis, meaning hemp.
