The harms of limestone

Les méfaits du calcaire

What exactly is limestone?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock mainly made up of calcium carbonate. It is found everywhere in France: mountains, plains, basins and plateaus. Limestone is also present in the drinking water that we consume on a daily basis. Don't panic, no danger for your health, quite the contrary since it provides us with a little extra calcium. So you can continue to drink hard tap water! That's the positive point, now let's move on to the disadvantages.

The problem is the concentration of limescale in drinking water, which can be disadvantageous if the concentration is too high. The drinking water most polluted by limestone is located in the Paris Basin , North, Hérault (see map) Limestone has an unpleasant drying power for linen and the human body. And it's even worse for your pipes and household appliances. Limescale dissolves in cold water , but above 60°C it transforms into TARTAR .

The hardness of limestone found in water is measured in “French degrees”. One degree = 4 mg/l of calcium.

The disadvantages of hard water at home:

The water has a funny taste that won't make you want to drink it.

Brittle and dry hair.

Irritated and dry skin.

Clean dishes that become tarnished over time.

Rough laundry that is not pleasant on the skin.

Household appliances, which deteriorate more quickly.

The boiler or hot water tank which breaks down, very sensitive to limescale.

Seized taps that no longer have pressure.

The scaled pipes which no longer have any flow, which ends up being blocked.

And finally your devices which require more energy to operate and will increase your electricity bills.
